ModivCare vs. SafeRide: How NEMT Brokers Work in North Carolina
ModivCare and SafeRide are the two transportation brokers most commonly behind Medicaid-covered rides in North Carolina. Here's what each one actually does.
← Back to ResourcesIf you’ve been told your ride is “covered through ModivCare” or “authorized by SafeRide,” it can be confusing — neither company is your insurance plan. Both are transportation brokers: companies that manage the logistics of non-emergency medical transportation on behalf of Medicaid plans and some insurers.
What ModivCare Does
ModivCare is one of the largest NEMT brokers in the country and manages transportation benefits for a number of Medicaid and managed care plans in North Carolina. When a ride is booked through ModivCare, they handle trip authorization and assign it to a contracted transportation provider — Allegiance is one of those providers.
What SafeRide Does
SafeRide Health performs a similar role for a different set of Medicaid and insurance plans operating in North Carolina: verifying eligibility, authorizing the trip, and dispatching it to a contracted provider like Allegiance.
Why It Matters for Scheduling a Ride
Your insurance or Medicaid plan decides whether you qualify for the NEMT benefit in the first place. The broker — ModivCare or SafeRide — handles getting that approved trip to a provider. For Medicaid-covered rides, that authorization step usually has to happen before Allegiance can dispatch the trip, so it’s worth building in a little extra lead time. Private-pay rides skip this step entirely — you can request those directly with Allegiance.
